David Nolen MD

ENT & Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon

Dr. Nolen has always been drawn to both science and art. He initially studied architecture as an undergraduate as it is a combination of those passions, but after volunteering in a hospital, he realized that medicine was his calling. Along his medical journey, he discovered facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and realized that this was the perfect fusion of his passions. This specialty embodies the principle of form meeting function, allowing him to combine technical expertise with artistic precision.

Dr. Nolen trained at Duke University, gaining extensive experience in the head and neck region through complex cancer resections, trauma cases, and both aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries. He further refined his skills under Dr. Jonathan Sykes at the University of California, Davis, a program he specifically chose for its vast case volume spanning high-end aesthetic surgery to congenital facial reconstruction.

Following his training, Dr. Nolen and his wife moved to Kenya to help develop an otolaryngology-head and neck surgery clinic at AIC Kijabe Hospital, where he also played a key role in establishing and running a multidisciplinary cleft team. His time there exposed him to a broad range of complex facial reconstructive challenges, deepening his expertise and adaptability in surgical care.

When his fourth child was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Nolen and his family relocated to Texas to be closer to loved ones. He joined Austin ENT and established ATX Facial Plastics, where he is committed to providing compassionate, expert care. His practice focuses on rhinoplasty, total nasal surgery, aging facial surgery, head and neck cancer resection and reconstruction, always prioritizing patient-centered, natural results.

Philosophy of Care

"I believe that every person is inherently beautiful, created in God’s image with unique worth and dignity. True beauty begins within and is rooted in inner peace, health, and joy. My approach to facial plastic surgery is not about changing who you are but enhancing the natural beauty that already exists. Through the art of facial plastics and reconstructive surgery, I strive to help individuals look as vibrant and refreshed on the outside as they feel on the inside. My goal is to partner with patients who are content and confident in themselves and simply want their outward appearance to reflect their inner vitality. With skill, artistry, and a deep respect for each individual’s natural features, I aim to create results that are both natural and transformative, honoring the beauty that is already there."

Philanthropy/Humanitarian Work

"I think we can all agree that our healthcare system is deeply flawed; but even with all of its issues, we are extremely privileged to have access to the care that we do. Many people around the world do not have this luxury. The Lancet Commission published a paper showing that 5 billion people around the world do not have access to surgical care, and 143 million additional surgical procedures are needed every year to meet the needs of the world’s population. Of those that do have access, 33 million people every year experience catastrophic expenditure to pay for needed surgeries. Many patients have to stop paying school fees for children, sell land, take out loans that they are not able to pay back, and this has repercussions for entire families and communities.

After witnessing these things first hand on short term trips, my wife and I decided to move to Kenya shortly after completing training. My family and I spent 7 wonderful years there working at AIC Kijabe Hospital caring for patients, helping build an otolaryngology head and neck surgery clinic, and helping create a multidisciplinary cleft team. I feel blessed that I got to work at such a special place with such great coworkers, and I want to shine a spotlight on the work that continues to be done there. Mitzi, the patient coordinator for ATX Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, originally hails from Hereford, Texas, and later moved to Lockney, a small West Texas town, where she spent her childhood and graduated from high school. Growing up in a farming family instilled a strong work ethic in her from an early age.

Mitzi pursued an Associate Degree in Fashion Merchandising but began her medical career in Orthodontics, working for over 14 years alongside a dedicated doctor in Lubbock.

In 1995, "Prince Charming" swept Mitzi off her feet and over to Austin where she continued her career in Orthodontics as a Patient Coordinator. She eventually transitioned into the field of Plastic Surgery, working alongside a highly esteemed plastic surgeon in Austin for two decades.

After her boss retired, Mitzi had the opportunity to join Dr. Nolen's practice, where she felt a profound sense of purpose in helping build the plastic surgery aspect of the practice. In addition to the purpose she feels in building this practice, she also feels a deep purpose in knowing each patient and approaching their care in a holistic manner.

Outside of work, Mitzi enjoys spending time with her husband and their beautiful family. Her weekends are often filled with attending her grandson's sporting events and quality time with family and her abundance of friends. She is spiritually and emotionally invested in Bible study and personal development. Mitzi is passionate about travel, enjoys reading, and keeps up with the latest trends in beauty, fashion, and home decor.

Mitzi is genuinely enthusiastic about her role as patient coordinator at ATX Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, where she is part of a close-knit team dedicated to the well-being of their patients.
